‘Just Friends’ Don’t Act The Way We Do

If you just wanted to be friends,
why did you say it back
when I told you I was still in love with you?

If you just wanted to be friends,
why did you pick me up from my home
to be with the people close to you, around a campfire?

If you just wanted to be friends,
why did you say yes
when I asked if we could sleep in the same bed?

If you just wanted to be friends,
why did you turn off the lights
get into the bed
and pull me closely against your body?

If you just wanted to be friends,
why did you kiss my neck?
Why did you let me kiss your lips?

If you just wanted to be friends,
why did you make love to me
when you had never done so before?

If you just wanted to be friends,
why did I fall asleep
with you dozing softly at my side?

If you just wanted to be friends,
why did I wake up to you
watching me sleep with 7 a.m. sun on your face?

If you just wanted to be friends,
why did your fingers trace my thigh
and your hands run through my hair?

If you just wanted to be friends,
why did you smile so bright
saying you never wanted to be anywhere else?

If you just wanted to be friends,
why did you kiss me again
and play with me in a sea of pillows and crisp bedsheets?

If you just wanted to be friends,
why did you say it back
when I told you I was still in love with you?

Time To Change Your Life

Over the past few years, Brianna Wiest has gained renown for her deeply moving, philosophical writing. This new compilation of her published work features pieces on why you should pursue purpose over passion, embrace negative thinking, see the wisdom in daily routine, and become aware of the cognitive biases that are creating the way you see your life. Some of these pieces have never been seen; others have been read by millions of people around the world. Regardless, each will leave you thinking: this idea changed my life.
